Toy Chests

One popular model of toy chests is the wooden toy chest.  This type looks nice in the living room as well as a child’s bedroom. It also will double as storage for other items after the children have outgrown their toys.  Or you can keep it for the grandchildren to use!

You can find craftsmen to make a toy chest for you, although it may take a bit of work.  It is helpful to have someone in your family that you know can do a good job with the woodworking.    There are a number of free plans you can find online to make your own – see the video on carving Irish celtic toy chests for example.  There is also these plans I found.

If you are making your own, you will want to make sure that safety comes first.  Make sure that there are no latches on the outside of the box.  You don’t want a child to accidentally get caught inside!  Also, be certain there are no sharp corners or edges, as well as no exposed screws.  You don’t want a child to cut himself.  You also want to ensure everything is thoroughly sanded and finished. The last thing you want is for your child to get a splinter while playing.

There are also premade models that are very nice.  I’ve already reviewed the KidKraft Dark Cherry Finish toy box.  There are a number of other colors and shapes that you can choose from as well.  I like that one because it doubles as a bench, which I think is cute.  But you may prefer one that is a little bit larger.

One drawback of a wooden toy chest is it’s easier to damage than a plastic one.  It will get scuffed and dinged as the child uses it.  Don’t expect it to stay new looking for long.  However, you can refinish it after your children are grown, if you get a quality wooden box.

A wooden toy chest can provide a beautiful alternative to more modern plastic designs.  It all comes down to what style will best suit your household!
